Call For Papers - RMEE2014 - The Management Between Profit and Social Responsibility

Conference Proceeding was indexed in “ISI Web of Knowledge” Proceedings Database

In 2008 Matthieu Glachant presented a paper entitled “Corporate Social Responsibility and Profits: Friends or Foes?” This title still reflect the confusing understanding of this concept both in business and in academia.

In simple words, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not something required by the law, but is something chosen by companies who want to practice business more responsibly and contribute for the better of society. On the other hand, companies are incorporating CSR into their organizational ideals because they are looking to improve as well their performance and company image. Some authors see CSR strategies as marketing gimmicks where companies try to get the attention of the public and improve the performance and sales. Some support of this perspective comes form the fast spreading practices of reporting on corporate social and environmental responsibility. According to KPMG’s 2011 International Corporate Responsibility Reporting Survey the percentage of the world largest 250 companies reporting on their social and environmental activities increased from 64% in 2003 to 95% in 2011.

From another perspective, CSR and profits are seen as enemies following Milton Friedman article published in NYT Magazine (1970) “The Social Responsibility of business is to increase its profits”. In his view, CSR is dangerous as it constrains profit opportunities.

European companies, especially from the northern and western part, have strongly established CSR management practices, while companies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) are at their beginning. EU accession, foreign ownership, competitive advantage and the influence of corporate governance codes are motivating factors.

The 4th RMEE Conference aims to explore this confusing context in the CEE countries, and to bring together the business and academic perspectives on CSR.
